March

Nebraska

Every March the Platte River in Nebraska becomes a scene of an awe inspiring spectacle. Sandhill cranes by the hundreds of thousands congregate along the river as a way stop on their migration north. Cranes from as far away as Mexico and Florida use the Platte River as a focal point of rest and sanctuary.

The Platte River is especially attractive to sandhill cranes. The shallow waters, broad banks and sand bars afford cranes perfect night roosts. At the break of dawn these overnight visitors leave the river bed thousands at a time en masse to feed in fields nearby. A sight to behold.
